RB Collection is pleased to offer this rare and desirable 1968 Shelby Mustang GT 350 Hertz Rent-A-Racer with original Built Sheet, and presented in its original colors of Candyapple Red over a black interior. This highly optioned GT 350 came equipped from new with a 302-4V engine, C4 automatic transmission, power disc brakes, and air-conditioning. According to the Deluxe Marti Report, this is one of just 224 Hertz Rent-A-Racers produced, marking the first return to the Shelby/Hertz Rental Car relationship since the storied GT 350H of 1966. This beautiful car is well-sorted and presents in very well-preserved condition. It is a primarily original car, that has had some restoration work done as needed over time, including a recent comprehensive mechanical overhaul that includes: a fully rebuilt engine with correct part number and date code for the year, model, and assembly date; rebuilt transmission; reconditioned original radiator upgraded to 3 row cooling core; new heater with heater box resealed; driveshaft rebuilt with new u-joints; new upper and lower control arms on both sides; new coil spring mounts; full front end alignment performed after new suspension component installation; original automatic shifter rebuilt and adjusted; rear taillight panel repainted and new lenses and bezels installed, new power brake booster installed; and all brakes checked and adjusted.
The Candyapple red paint is in good condition, displaying some minor cracking on the hood but with an honest and attractive appeal that invites regular use.The body is straight and crisp, with good-quality brightwork, correct rocker stripes, and proper 10-spoke aluminum wheels with Goodyear crossply tires give the proper stance and handling characteristics. The Marti Report also lists this car has featuring shoulder harnesses, Visibility Group, wheel lip moldings, Sports Deck, tilt away steering wheel, and tinted glass.

The original black interior presents in very good condition, with “knitted vinyl” upholstery, sports deck folding rear seat, and optional swing away steering column. It also includes the original AM radio, Interior Decor Group, and Select Aire A/C to give the car a decidedly upmarket feel inside. This car is a great example of how the GT 350 grew from a stripped-out homologation special into a sophisticated and luxurious high-performance Grand Touring car.

When Carroll Shelby got his hands on the new Ford Mustang late in 1964, he created one of the most legendary American cars of all time. The earliest Shelby GT 350 Mustangs were hardcore, hard-edged machines built to homologate the Mustang for SCCA B-Production racing. Much more than just a go-fast stripe package, the original GT 350 packed a highly tuned 289 cubic-inch V8, aluminum gearbox case, redesigned suspension pickups, Koni dampers, and much more. The car was a hit with racers and wanna-be racers alike, and demand outstripped supply. As Shelby Mustangs picked up race wins and national championships, foot traffic in Ford showrooms picked up as well, and top brass in Dearborn took notice.

As Ford execs saw the marketing potential in the Shelby Mustang, the company became more involved in its specification, gradually becoming more involved in the design and production process. For 1967, the Mustang got its first major facelift, which was revised again for 1968. The car was larger overall than its predecessors, with a sleek yet muscular look, particularly in fastback form. The GT 350 returned, now joined by the GT 500. While the GT 500 stole the headlines with its tire-shredding big-block, the GT 350 remained the driver’s choice, with superior handling in the spirit of the original models, thanks to its light yet potent small block V8 over the front axle. By now, Ford had essentially taken over production from Shelby and the cars had a more “grown up” feel, while sacrificing little of the muscular edge that made the Shelby Mustang such a legend.
