In 2001, Porsche was poised to introduce the first all-new 911 since 1965. The outgoing 993 had been much loved, but traditional air-cooled engines could not keep pace with fuel economy and emissions standards, so the new model, known as the 996, would have a water-cooled flat six for the first time ever. Of course, Porsche had been successfully building water-cooled cars since the 1970?s but purists still scoffed at the idea of a 911 with radiators. Furthermore, for the first time in the 911?s history, this new 911 shared almost nothing with the original 901. The classic rear engine layout stayed the same, of course, and the 996 used a development of the 993?s multilink rear suspension, but it was essentially a clean sheet design.

Thanks to the new four valve per cylinder, 3.4 liter flat-six that put out a healthy 300 horsepower, and a six-speed manual gearbox, performance was still in familiar Porsche territory. In classic Porsche fashion, refinement began immediately, meaning later models, like this 2001 example, had better reliability and tractability from the engine. In keeping with tradition, the 996 was available as a Coupe, glass-roof Targa or a full cabriolet. Turbo, GT2 and GT3 variants followed and set the stage for the new generation of hardcore performance 911?s, all of which owe their existence to the 996. Today?s enthusiasts have come to realize the 996 offers outstanding poise and performance, as well as excellent value. With the values of all earlier 911s experiencing a sharp increase, it is easy to consider the 996 generation to be the next classic Porsche on the move.

Our featured example is a 2001 911 Cabriolet finished in the highly attractive color combination of Seal Gray with a Graphite Gray interior. It has a full power soft top in Graphite Gray as well as the desirable, matching removable hard top. This fully documented one-owner 911 has covered a mere 19,800 miles and comes complete with a full binder of service receipts and records. It was very well optioned from new, with the following desirable equipment:

* 18? Turbo look alloy wheels with colored crests

* Comfort Package

* Technic Package

* Heated front seats

* Hard Top

* Becker In-dash CD player

* Removable cabriolet wind diffuser

Averaging just under 1,400 miles per year, the light use does not translate into neglect. Extensive service records show it was very well maintained, with regular oil services performed by a Porsche factory dealer. It was detailed at nearly every service, further proof the car was lovingly maintained.

While in our care, we performed a comprehensive, 110-point inspection to ensure it runs strong and everything functions as it should. The troublesome factory IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing has been replaced with a proven and reliable ceramic unit from LN-Engineering. This is purely a preventative measure, as the car showed no signs of trouble. It is now ready for plenty of worry-free miles. The six speed manual gearbox shifts smoothly and the clutch feels tight and bites at the proper point. Factory ?turbo-look? alloy wheels are shod with?Pirelli P-Zero tires with plenty of tread. The wheels are overall very nice though some minor flaws are evident at the very edges of the lips. The original Seal Gray paint is excellent overall, again with only a minor flaw or two from light use and zero evidence of repairs.

Likewise, the graphite gray interior is beautiful, with no rips, tears or undue wear on the leather seats, carpet, center console or dash. We replaced the shift knob/boot due to a scratch, but the interior is otherwise excellent. The soft top and rear window are excellent, as is the removable hard top ? displaying very good paint and a flawless headliner.

The notorious LCD screen on the HVAC unit has been properly repaired and now functions perfectly. Included in the sale will be the hard top, folding wind deflector, hard top tools, full set of books and manuals, spare key, and the aforementioned service history. A clean Carfax report shows it is accident free and confirms the single ownership. Freshly serviced and ready for use, this 996 is an outstanding example and represents fantastic value for the money.
