For the 1956 model year, Ford’s flagship Crown Victoria again led the way for Dearborn’s passenger car line. While the sporty Thunderbird grabbed the headlines, the luxurious Crown Victoria was the family man’s choice. The Crown Vic was now available with the T-Bird’s 292 cubic inch V8 which gave it very respectable performance. 1956 would be the final year for the unique optional “Skyliner” package which featured a large glass roof panel over the front passenger compartment. Also known as a “glass-top” this package first appeared in 1954 on the Ford Crestline Skyliner and Mercury Monterey Sun Valley. Just under 2,000 glass-top Fords were built in 1955, but for 1956 sales had fallen considerably and just 605 were sold. Today, the Crown Victoria Skyliner is one of the rarest and most desirable Ford passenger cars of the 1950s.
